Blaze threatens Hawarden houses By AMANDA BOWES A fire that could have had devastating consequences for houses in the small rural township of Hawarden in North Canterbury, has been a timely reminder of the extreme fire risk in the district. The blaze, which started in a shelter belt between properties and was fanned by a brisk nor’ west wind, quickly engulfed trees before taking hold of a garage.

Principal Fire Officer for the Hurunui District Council Allan Grigg, warns norwesters combined with having had no decent rain since June, is making ground conditions extremely dry and people need to be careful around anything that has the potential to start a fire. ‘‘We are all on tenterhooks with the conditions and potential for fire and plead with everyone to take extra care,’’ says Mr Grigg.

Hawarden Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Murray Tilson, says when the brigade arrived it was clear they would need back up from Waikari and the Rural Fire Service. The fire was ‘‘complex’’ as it burned vegetation, structures and the contents of the garage, which included LPG cannisters, petrol and other flammable items. Firefighters donned breathing apparatus as the contents of the shed created toxic smoke and

explosions were heard throughout the village as the LPG ignited. Adding to the complexity was the distance from fire hydrants. Ten lengths of hose were needed to reach the blaze and extra water was needed from the rural fire tanker. Another smaller grass fire started about 60 metres away from the main fire and was quickly brought under control. Having the fire brigade close by, a prompt call out and a norwest

wind saved neighbouring properties from being engulfed by the flames. The best thing people could do now if they feel their houses are under threat from a near by fire, is block the down pipes at the bottom and fill the guttering with water so any sparks or embers are doused, says Mr Grigg. Mr Tilson says it was a good effort from those fighting the fire in difficult conditions. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the blaze.

Track being formed By ROBYN BRISTOW It is all hands on deck to clear a track through native bush near the Ashley Gorge reserve. Fouryearolds to 80yearolds mixed hard work with fun at two recent working bees giving the first stage of the project a onehour easy return trip from the Ashley Gorge Reserve through Department of Conservation (DOC) land real impetus. It is hoped in the future the hard work will help grow the project to include the DOC waterfall track, and eventually for more mature walkers, a hill climb with the reward being amazing views over Ashley Gorge and beyond, across the Canterbury Plains. Project leader Dave Shelton says the spirit of the young and how they put their hearts into it was an inspiration to all. Manager of track development for the Ashley Gorge Reserve Advisory Group John Burton, in coordination with DOC, says there has been a need for walking tracks near the Ashley Gorge Reserve for a long time and all the DOC land with its spectacular bush and specimen trees was waiting just ‘‘a stone’s throw away’’. ‘‘And even better, here is such a great opportunity for our people, especially the young ones, to be not only learning about their native heritage but to be involved in planning, building and conserving a wonderful, lasting asset for their future."

‘‘It is really rewarding to see the interest we are already getting from our local schools, scout groups and others wanting to be involved,’’ he says. Alongside the trackbuilding there would also be a need to develop a pest control programme which would be great handson educational projects for young people. The track is routed to include focal points of interest with unusually large specimens of native trees including black beech, matai, broadleaf, fuchsia and kanuka. ‘‘An effective pest control programme will aim at enhancing the habitat for an endangered native snail as well as creating a safe island to improve the numbers of native birdlife,’’ he says. Along with developing the walking track system, the Ashley Gorge Reserve Advisory Group is also planning a series of information boards with subjects including local history, flora and fauna and track information. A substantial shelter to house them will be situated in the Waimakariri District Councilowned Ashley Gorge Reserve grounds. Mr Burton says anyone interested in lending a hand to help clear the track can attend a working bee on Saturday, December 5 Dec from 9am to 12 noon, meeting at the Ashley Gorge Reserve office. Special early morning delivery By SHELLEY TOPP Megan and Leon Rietveld’s baby daughter was six days overdue, but timed her run to perfection for an important day in Rangiora. The baby, who is yet to be named, was born at the Health Hub in Rangiora, during the early hours of Tuesday, November 24, the official opening day for the new $7 million facility. Only a few hours after the birth Megan and her beautiful new daughter were surrounded by guests attending the opening, and news media personnel. The Minister of Health Dr Jonathan Coleman, who had opened the Health Hub a few minutes earlier, told Megan, who gave birth at 1.15 that morning, she looked ‘‘very chipper’’. A large crowd of officials and invited guests attended the opening ceremony. Officials were given a tour of the new building after the opening ceremony. Dr Coleman said the number of births had increased significantly in North Canterbury in recent years. ‘‘With over 150 births this year, it’s timely to have expanded and improved maternity facilities in the region.’’ ‘‘With plans for expansion, Rangiora Health Hub will provide a central location for a range of regional health services in the future,’’ he said. ‘‘We want to see more services delivered closer to home. Integration and care closer to home will help develop a more efficient and sustainable health system. It will also provide a better patient experience.’’

Rayleen Johnson’s working bee loaf (makes 2): 1 lb sugar (450 grams), 2 oz butter (60 grams), 1 lb mixed fruit (450 grams), 2 cups water, 1 lb flour (450 grams), 2 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp mixed spice, quarter tsp salt, 1 egg. Combine sugar, fruit, butter and water in a saucepan. Boil for five minutes. Cool. Add slightly beaten egg and stir sifted dry ingredients into fruit. Pour into two loaf tins and bake at 150deg C for 1hr, 30 mins.

Volunteers have transformed empty grounds around Rangiora’s new $7 million Health Hub into a lovely garden. Last Saturday, a working bee of 24 people began the mammoth task of planting 4500 trees and plants around the grounds, which have been landscaped by Grant Edge, of Edge Landscape, in Fernside. The volunteers were all members of Keep Rangiora Beautiful, Rangiora Lions, or Rangiora Rotary, and included Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers, and his wife, Marilyn. The maternity and convalescence facility was opened for business on October 28, with an official opening ceremony planned for November 24. Edge said it was great to be involved in the project. The garden was a nice mixture of New Zealand plants, with others chosen for colour, he said. ‘‘I have introduced some flowering crab apple trees, along with some lavender to supply some spring colour,’’ he said. ‘‘I understand that spring is the peak birthing time so it’s good to have some colour in the garden at that time.’’

New tenants for tavern By AMANDA BOWES The Hawarden Tavern has new tenants and the trustees couldn’t be happier. Mike Davis, his partner Paula Garcia and Mike’s mother Ann and toddler Lorena have taken over the business and are settling into the small North Canterbury town. Mike grew up in Hawarden but left in 1985 for work. He always wanted to come back to the area and after hearing the tavern needed new lessees, talked it over with the family who agreed it would be worth taking the punt. Paula met Mike when she came out from Brazil to work on a dairy farm. She was training to be a vet and the two hit it off when Paula got work on the dairy farm Mike was managing. She ended up staying longer than originally planned but had to return home when her visa ran out. After going back and forth between New Zealand and Brazil, where she finished her vet internship, Paula finally settled with Mike, along with their daughter Lorena. Ann wanted to retire from teaching and Mike and Paula needed a carer for Lorena if they were to lease the pub, so Ann joined in the family venture. Mike says it is great to be back living in his home town and he has caught up with people from his past.

Paula is also happy living in Hawarden she says she hates big cities and likes the Kiwi climate. The family have been thrown in at the deep end as everything happened fast. ‘‘It needed to be that way to make it happen,’’ says Mike. The restaurant is up and running as a cafe ´ and Paula is bringing a touch of Brazil to the menu, with such delicacies as her home made cheese balls. Mike is chef and has had plenty of tips from his brother who is a good cook. As the family develops the business, they are hoping to introduce family days, meat raffles and other entertainment. Aware of the need to build slowly, the cafe is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 4pm. The pub opens 4pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 11am Thursday to Sunday. The bottle store is also open and for people who want backbacker accommodation, the cabins are ready for guests. While Paula misses her family, she says her parents would like to retire here also and will be having an extended stay soon. She would like to go to Australia to do a course which would allow her to practice veterinary medicine here, with a goal to work for the local veterinary practices.

Hamper for shoppers

Voice for youth Rangiora’s latest youth MP hopes to be a voice for young people in the region. Rangiora High School year 12 student Holly Fletcher (16) has been chosen as a youth MP for Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey for a tenure which runs from January 25 until the Youth Parliament sits in July. She says she is looking forward to the challenge and even hinted Mr Doocey ‘‘might have a bit of competition’’. ‘‘It will be exciting,’’ she says. ‘‘I’m doing it for the experience and reading into what Youth Parliament entails, it will give me skills as a leader and the training will invaluable and it will help me be a better member of the community.’’ Mr Doocey says it will be good to have the perspective of young people living through the earthquake recovery at the Youth Parliament. ‘‘The Waimakariri voice is quite unique. We have our own challenges and we are well advanced in the recovery. ‘‘When you think that we are five years

down the track and Holly is only 16, we have people who have lived onethird of their lives in the recovery and it will be good to have that perspective in parliament.’’ Despite her young age, Holly was active in getting food out to people following the February 2011 earthquake and helping close family who were briefly forced out of earthquake damaged homes. She also volunteers in resthomes. Mr Doocey says it was these experiences which helped her stand out from the other applicants. Holly can expect a busy six months in the build up to Youth Parliament, Mr Doocey adds. ‘‘We will get Holly to attend as many meetings as possible and we hope to go and speak to schools. And we will be using social media as a platform for young people to raise their issues and concerns’’. After Holly completes year 13 next year, she hopes to study science at either Canterbury or Otago University.

Heading to Christchurch Hospital?

Rga health hub open Bridge too expensive Tuesday was a great day for North Canterbury as we celebrated the opening of the Rangiora Health Hub by Minister of Health Hon Jonathan Coleman. I can personally speak for the first class facilities and great maternity staff following the arrival of the newest addition to our family just over a week ago. My wife had a wonderful stay in the maternity unit with its northfacing windows and homely feel, and it was great for me to be able to visit them so close to home. The new building has birthing and postnatal facilities, respite facilities and a full kitchen catering for in house patient meals as well as Meals on Wheels. This week’s opening was a significant milestone for our community and I am looking forward to 2017 when we open the next stage. This will see the relocation of the Hagley Outpatients building from Christchurch Hospital to add another 800 square metres of space for additional services. The health hub provides North

With my background in mental health, it was great to also link the Health Minister to the work being done by Kaiapoi Borough School, which has developed several initiatives to help ensure the wellbeing of students. Research shows us years three to seven postrecovery are the most difficult for psychological and social recovery. Working in our local communities, I know that the effects of the earthquakes are still being felt and it was rewarding to bring the Minister down to meet up with some of the mentalhealth service providers working to help our young students increase resilience and wellbeing. The start of the week saw a high level of interest from our rural residents who attended the Provincial Priorities meeting in Oxford. It was good to facilitate putting our local issues before a spread of rural based MPs to help us to develop policy to further strengthen our communities.

I am often asked why ‘‘they’’ don’t build another bridge across the Waimakariri. Often somewhere upstream in the area of Two Chain Road in Swannanoa is mentioned and I am sometimes told that there used to be a plan. Well, there has never been a plan. In 200001, a District Transport Study was completed I chaired the group that worked on it. It did look at that option but we were quickly told by the national roading authority at the time that such a bridge would be too expensive for its limited benefit. The current two bridges (the Northern Motorway and Main North Road) cross the river at a narrow cut that was dug between the two World Wars. The river upstream is vastly wider and any bridge would be much longer than those we already have. In addition, there is little roading structure on either side. Most of the people who use the bridge from our northern side live in the RangioraKaiapoiWoodend/Pegasus triangle and those further north feed into the triangle over the two Ashley bridges. About 40,000 of Waimakariri’s

55,000 people live in these areas. A bridge that increases their distance to Christchurch does not make a lot of sense given that the current bridges are the most direct route and have a roading infrastructure directed at them. A new bridge would be a local road. It would still require New Zealand Transport Authority approval to get government subsidy, which under new rules is now just over 50 percent, compared to the 60 percent we got for the new Ashley bridge. Because the river is the district boundary, the other 50% would be shared equally between Christchurch and Waimakariri, the same ratio that applies to the Main North Road bridge. A far cheaper and more effective option would be to increase the capacity of the Motorway bridges. They were built to take third lanes and this option is now being actively considered as part of the Northern Arterial project due to start construction late next year. This will be a motorway taking traffic directly to Christchurch from Chaneys.

The owner of two sports utility vehicles (SUVs) which became stuck in the surf at Waikuku Beach earlier this month will not be fined by Environment Canterbury (Ecan). Both vehicles have now been removed from the water. One was pulled from the surf the evening it became stuck, on Saturday November 14. The other was removed from the water the next morning and towed away by the owner, says Valyn Barrett, Ecan’s regional leader investigations and incident response manager. ‘‘Both vehicles were intact when removed, and caused negligible environmental impact as they were both removed within a fairly short timeframe,’’ Mr Barrett says. ‘‘The original vehicle became stuck after a misjudgment of the incoming tide by the owner.’’ The second vehicle became stuck while it was being used to try to pull the first vehicle out of the water.

Deputy bids farewell By DAVID HILL When John Guthrie came to Kaiapoi Borough School in September 1988 he thought it would be a short stay. Now after 27 years as deputy principal at the school, he has decided to call it a day. ‘‘I came here as a teaching deputy principal after being principal at Leithfield School. I left there because it was quite small and I thought I would come here for three or five years to get experience at a larger school and then become a principal. ‘‘But I never moved again. I loved the community, the school and the whole deal. A few times I thought about leaving, but then I thought why move? ‘‘It’s a funny feeling. I always said I would retire when I got sick of it, but that day has never arrived. So I decided if I don’t make myself retire, I never will.’’ When Mr Guthrie first arrived at Kaiapoi Borough School there were 200 students and the deputy principal was full time in the classroom. However, after a few years it was decided to make the classes slight bigger so Mr Guthrie could be released from classroom duties. ‘‘It meant I could provide backup and work with the kids causing trouble and give the teachers a much easier day, because they didn’t have to worry about those students.’’ Eventually schools became entitled to a nonteaching deputy principal and now Kaiapoi Borough School has two non teaching deputy principals. The school roll peaked at more than 400 before the earthquakes and there are now 376 students. Mr Guthrie says he has not missed being in the classroom.

‘‘The beauty of the role has always been dealing with people teachers, kids and parents. There’s a certain amount of paperwork, but not as much as a principal and if you’re doing the bits you love, you’re happy not to move. ‘‘I have literally watched kids from babies and then seen them come back with their own kids. There’s really something special that you get out of these relationships with kids and parents that you couldn’t have any other way.’’ Mr Guthrie says he has always made a point of ‘‘getting to know all the kids’’ and not just the ones who get in trouble. ‘‘I have always thought that’s unfair that certain kids get all the attention. Certainly there’s kids who need extra help, but all kids need to have that contact and feel important. Teaching is about giving that feeling of being important and having strong selfesteem and knowing they are as much a part of the place as anyone else.’’ In his retirement, Mr Guthrie plans to get on with some DIY projects, do some travel and he may even return to the classroom to do some relief teaching. Principal Murray Overton says Mr Guthrie ‘‘has made a significant contribution to the school, teaching and providing leadership and support for many students and their families’’. A special farewell is planned for Friday, December 11, with a community picnic at 12.30pm in the school grounds. In the event of rain the picnic will be held in the hall. A special assembly will follow in the hall at 1.45pm. Everyone is welcome. Mr Overton says the school is compiling a ‘‘Journal for John’’ and invites former students and families to come and write in it, paste in a picture or photos of Mr Guthrie, or contribute towards the gift.

What began as a simple caravan restoration developed into a highend project, with the potential for something special at the finish. The project began in February this year when Kiki Mitchell, a doityourself enthusiast, from Rangiora, bought a 1971 Zephyr Touring caravan to restore. It was to be her new project, and she envisaged it would take a month, possibly two, to complete, doing most of the work herself. It was obvious the tiny caravan had seen better days when she bought it, but she hadn’t realised how much work needed to be done until she got it home. The interior of the caravan had to be completely gutted, thoroughly checked for leaks, rewired, and relined, before any of the decorating work could begin, and the exterior also needed a lot of work. Kiki called in Grant Shadbolt Building Solutions Limited, in Rangiora, Autobody and Glass Repairs Limited, in Kaiapoi, and Doig Auto Electrical, in Rangiora, to help. The project became known as Kiki’s Grand Design. It’s gone way over the initial restoration budget, and the work has taken month’s longer to complete, but the little tourer’s elegant transformation is stunning to see. The high level of skill from the tradesmen involved in the project, and Kiki’s clever eye for design, style and colour have transformed this caravan into a lovely, warm, lightfilled holiday home on wheels for three people, or a spare room to spend some quiet time in at home. It’s also a place where one of Kiki’s

Waikari’s Ian Thornley has restored tractors and farm machinery for many years and his latest project gave new life to a 1939 Farmall F14 row crop tractor. The 76yearold tractor had been sitting in a shed in Redcliffs for 30 years and when tractor enthusiast, Winton Dalley told the owner about Ian Thornley’s restoration skills, he contacted him to see if he would take on the challenge. ‘‘I was happy to do it. As I’m now retired it helps fill in the days,’’ says Ian. Ian went to Redcliffs to look at the old tractor and discussed what needed to be done to get it back into shape. Once the Farmall had been delivered to Waikari, Ian got cracking and began pulling the tractor to bits. The decision had been made to strip the tractor down and rebuild as necessary. Ian says the sea air had eaten away part of the head and when the manifold was unbolted it broke in two. Because there were no spares, Ian had the task of mending the bits that needed it. Some parts were sent away and sand blasted, but the chassis, engine and steering were taken care of in the workshop. Ian also restored the back wheels by hand. The fuel tank needed a new bottom, a new exhaust manifold was made and part of the tank mount brackets needed replacing as they had rusted out. After around 220 hours of work, the Farmall was looking like new and running sweet. Ian thought his job was done, but then the owner decided he wanted a starter motor instead of the crank handle so he could be guaranteed the tractor would start whenever he wanted. This was a challenge of a different kind, but Ian figured out a way of fulfilling the owners wishes the only trouble was it meant pulling the Farmall to bits again. Ian split the drive between the clutch and the gear box. He then got a fly wheel from a Hyundai Getz and machined it to make it lighter. Another bell housing was then made and the hyundai starter motor was placed in the middle of the tractor. Thanks to Ian’s ingenuity, the tractor can now be started by pushing a button, something its manufacturer would never have thought possible. Ian says he loves restoring all types of old farm machinery and many of his restored tractors have been unwanted items. ‘‘These machines were what helped make NZ agriculture get to where it is today and there is nothing worse than seeing them go for scrap.’’ His restorations aren’t just for show. With other keen vintage tractor enthusiasts from Hawarden and Waikari, the tractors are put to work in ploughing competitions, where the skill of the driver is truly tested.

New hope for long-term back pain sufferers.

After nearly eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain.

Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare. Dave had suffered over 20 years of back pain from degenerated discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option,” he said, “as long as I still could walk, there was hope.” Dave tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Teeter Inversion Table works on three levels: Discs, Muscles and Posture. Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate. De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life. Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into you lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large an improvement after only one treatment.

posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings.

John and Susan Secker took over the popular Rangiora bar less than two months ago and plan to develop the place for ‘‘friendly family dining’’. ‘‘We have five children and grandchildren of our own, so we want to make this a place where the community can come together in a casual, comfortable and relaxed environment,’’ Mrs Secker says. Mr Secker says the couple has plans to develop the venue, with renovations already under way in the outdoor al fresco dining area and they plan to revamp the upstairs function area with new carpet in the New Year, to make it a more inviting space. They also plan to link the revamp in with some of Rangiora’s history. ‘‘We are looking to develop the place for friendly family dining and also for small functions upstairs, like birthdays and work functions for up to 50 or 60 people,’’ Mr Secker says. The al fresco dining area has been revamped with flowers and umbrellas and can be booked for a buffet barbecue function for up to 40 people. ‘‘It’s a nice safe, quiet space and it’s

secure for kids they can’t go out on to the road. They can wander round and fiddle with the plants. It’s such a great area for families,’’ Mrs Secker says. The Seckers are keen to talk to local community groups who want to organise regular social events and fundraisers like quiz nights, with children welcome. Mr Secker is a born and bred Cantabrian, while Mrs Secker is originally from a small town in Australia, and they are keen to be a part of their new community. Since taking over, the couple has begun to revamp the menu, introducing a brunch menu from 10am and there are new children’s options and daily specials available. Christmas function menus are also on offer. A $10 roast of the day is available and senior citizens with a gold card can get a 20% discount. A courtesy van is available from Thursday to Saturday evenings and by arrangement for parties of six or more people on other days in Rangiora and Kaiapoi. Disney Princesses are set to feature at the Kaiapoi Carnival on Saturday, December 5. Organiser Belinda Topp says five Disney Princesses, including Queen Elsa, Belle, Jasmine, Snow White and Cinderella, are among the star attractions at this year’s Kaiapoi Carnival at Trousselot Park, Charles Street, on Saturday, December 5, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. One of the day’s highlights will be Queen Elsa singing ‘‘Let It Go’’ on the main stage at 2pm. The dark lord, Darth Vader and his stormtroopers will also be out in force during the Santa parade and carnival. Darth Vader has been out on the streets visiting local Kaiapoi businesses to promote the carnival. ‘‘The event is gearing up to be an absolutely spectacular day. With something for everyone you can be sure to see not one but five Disney Princesses,’’ organiser Belinda Topp says. For the older kids, a Zombie Apocalypse arena will be set up, with an age restriction of 10, and children aged 1014 years needing parental consent to enter. The carnival will also include a live band, clowns, magicians, bouncy castles and stalls. Entertainment will also be provided by Sport Suzie and there will plenty of food to buy for lunch. The local Rock ’n Roll Dance Club is also planning to strut some moves at the carnival.

Toot for Tucker returns Gym a ‘life-saver’ By DAVID HILL

Toot for Tucker plans to reach more Waimakariri district homes than ever before. Organiser Bev Wright says the 5th annual food collection, which will be held on Tuesday, December 1, from 5.30pm, has been extended into Kaiapoi for the first time. ‘‘It’s growing. This is the 5th year we’ve done it we did it for three years exclusively in Rangiora, and then we introduced Oxford, Woodend and Pegasus last year and now we have all the major towns in the district involved.’’ Ms Wright says 10,600 Toot for Tucker bags have been distributed around those urban areas. While there are no planned collections in the rural parts of the district, she says food donations will be gratefully received. ‘‘We just don’t have the resources to go out into all the rural areas, but we are happy to go out and collect groups of bags and if people are coming into town over the next two weeks they can drop food off.’’ Last year North Loburn School collected food for Toot for Tucker, Ms Wright says. Collection points are available at the Cust and Ohoka service stations, BP at Woodend and Village Milk in Oxford, as well as the recipient food banks and the food doesn’t need to be in a Toot for Tucker bag. All food collected in Kaiapoi will be passed on to the food bank at Kaiapoi Community Support, while the Salvation Army’s food bank in Rangiora

The Rangiora collectors will assemble at Dudley Park from 5.30pm, ready to disperse at 6pm, while other collectors will disperse from the Kaiapoi and Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigades and from High Street in Oxford. ‘‘It’s a lot of fun. It usually takes an hour to an hour and a half and then everyone comes back with their goodies and has a sausage,’’ she says. Ms Wright says the volunteers enjoy helping out their community as there is a lot of need. ‘‘The assumption has often been that food banks are called on by people on benefits. But now we have what’s called ‘the working poor’ where there may be two parents working on minimum wage and they need a bit of help. ‘‘Places like the Salvation Army encourage people to look at their budgets, so they don’t always need help, but it’s not easy out there. ‘‘You get small business people who go through a rough patch or contractors who may go through long periods between contracts and they don’t always qualify for assistance from WINZ.’’ She says she is also aware of young people who are in jobs where the hours vary each week ‘‘some weeks they may end up only doing 25 hours so they struggle just to pay their rent and keep their car going’’. Mary Pringle says turning to the gym at age 75 has been a ‘‘lifesaver’’. Mary joined Curves in Rangiora in 2007 and says it is the best thing she did to help ease arthritic back and hip pain which developed sometime after having a hip replacement in 2005. Eight years on, Mary has won the Senior Curvette category for members 60 plus, at the Curvette of the Year competition for members. Mary was one of three from Curves Rangiora who were encouraged to enter in one of the five categories by owner Jennifer Penwell, and was the only South Island entrant to win a category. She was recently flown to Auckland with the other four finalist to take part in a makeover and a photo shoot for New Idea magazine. The spritely 75yearold, says in her entry she joined the gym to lose a little bit of weight. ‘‘But in the main, my goal was to be fitter and more supple than I had been. ‘‘I did not want to be an elderly woman who sat in a chair all day feeling sorry for herself. To start the day with Curves gives me energy and wellbeing. ‘‘It wakes the endorphins from their sleepy existence. Because I try to go five or six days a week I am fitter and healthier than some women 10 years younger than me,’’ she says. ‘‘Curves to me is the answer for arthritis sufferers as you can work as hard as you are able and there is no walking involved except for the recovery boards,’’ she says. Civic centre back on track Despite a number of delays, Kaikoura’s new civic centre is back on track. Mayor Winston Grey says the reinstatement of the roof is due to be completed this week and once this is done, scaffolding will be able to come down, an external staircase can be built and inside work can be completed. ‘‘The bulk of it’s been done, so once we can get inside we can do the fit out. There’s no dates on it for when it will open and we have a quiet period during December and January when people take their holidays, so we’re probably looking at autumn so it’s

getting closer.’’ The total cost of the project is now expected to be around $4.9 million about $522,000 above the original budget set in February 2012. The budget was revised in July 2012 at $4.68 million with a contingency of $225,000. Mr Gray says the increase in costs is due to project delays and having to replace the roof, which in turn resulted in increased costs of crane hire, scaffolding and labour. About $800,000 has been spent on replacing the roof and associated costs, but is subject to an insurance claim and litigation.

Speed limit signs approved Variable speed limit signs are to be put up outside Kaiapoi North School. The Waimakariri District Council last week approved a proposal for a 40kph variable speed limit (VSL) school zone to be placed on Williams Street outside Kaiapoi North School. The speed limit will apply between 8.25am and 9am and 2.55pm and 3.15pm on school days with flashing signs in place. Mayor David Ayers says it will be the first VSL school zone the council has established in an urban area in the district. Other urban VSL zones at Woodend School (40kph) and the former Waikuku School (60kph), were established by the New Zealand Transport Agency. The council has created VSL zones in rural areas, including Swannanoa and Loburn Schools. Mr Ayers says the establishment of the VSL zone follows community feedback. ‘‘I have heard comments about the speeds around Kaiapoi North School and the Kaiapoi Community Board has had a lot of comment over the last few years about safety around the Kaiapoi North School gate.’’ At this stage there are no plans to establish more VSL zones in the district, but the council ‘‘will continue to monitor safety around school gates’’, Mr Ayers says. King Street, outside Rangiora Borough School, is also a busy street and Mr Ayers says he is aware of issues outside Rangiora High School and Kaiapoi High School. ‘‘We need to urge people to be cautious around school gates and driving at 30kph or less is probably the safest thing to do when people are coming out of the school. ‘‘We also need to remind people that the speed limit around school buses is 20kph where the bus has stopped to unload passengers and not just for cars on the same side of the road.’’

Christmas artwork ‘pretty cool’ Kaiapoi carols By SHELLEY TOPP Thomas Cumming, Lara Smith, centre, and Emily McDade, all aged 13, stopped by the Farmers’ building site security fence while they were in Rangiora last Sunday to view the new Christmasstory artwork. They liked the display and said it was ‘‘pretty cool’’. The display is a 7400 Upgrade community group initiative, and portrays the story of A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree, the New Zealand version of the English Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas. The art work was installed last Sunday, by members of the 7400 Upgrade community group, and other volunteers. The illustrations were done by Rangiora artist Rosie Pack, and the words are from A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree, written by Kingi Ihaka with copyright permission from publishers Penguin Random House New Zealand. The Farmers’ building construction company, Watts and Hughes Construction, kindly allowed the artwork to be installed

Kaiapoi’s churches are coming together for a community carols evening. The annual Kaiapoi Combined Churches Community Carols Celebration will be held at Trousselot Park on Friday, December 11, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm, with the St Patrick’s Catholic School hall a back up in case of rain. Riverside Christian Fellowship pastor Jon Hailes says the evening will kick off with Kaiapoi Brass playing instrumental pieces, carols, themes and Christmas music on the band rotunda from 7.15pm. Kaiapoi Baptist Church pastor Paul Askin will be the MC for the evening, with each local church contributing an item, whether singing Christmas carols or providing some festive drama or skits. St Patrick’s children will be performing a skit. ‘‘It will be a good night. Last year there were around 100 people and we are hoping for more this year,’’ Mr Hailes says.

The game

olo is described as hockey on horseback. It is played by two teams with four players in each team. They use a mallet “stick” while riding the ponies to aim a small plastic ball at a goal. They line up p arallel to each other in the centre of the field. Two mounted umpires control the game. The game begins when one umpire throws the ball down the centre between the two lines of p layers. Using skill and speed manoeuvring horses, each team tries to score by knocking the ball through the opposition team’s goal posts. The game is broken down into chukkas of 7-and-a-half minutes in length. In this particular tournament, there are five chukkas per game. At half-time, spectators may be asked to repair the ground by stamping divots back into the field. After each goal is scored, teams change ends.

The horses

The horses that participate in the sport have been skilfully trained to play the game and take the knocks that come with the sport. Generally in New Zealand, small thoroughbreds are used in the sport. Horses are generally about five years old when they begin playing and reach their peak at about 10 years of age. Some horses play the sport until they are 18 years old.

Hogget competitions produce top sheep

The New Zealand Corriedale Society’s annual hogget competitions have produced top results for North Canterbury flocks. The top ram and ewe hoggets were announced and exhibited at the Canterbury A&P Show in what are widely recognised as the most commercial show classes. The FMG ewe hogget competition has been running f or 30 years, with a similar ram hogget model established last year and sponsored by HRL. The Burrows family of Horrelville had the first-placed ewe hogget as well as winning the team event, with three sheep in the top five. Burrows’ top hogget produced a 6.00kg, 25.5 micron fleece with a value of $46.86. The best hogget scanned an eye muscle area (EMA) of 28.43. Tom Burrows was thrilled to win the competition that had last been won by his Eudunda sheep more than 20 years ago. He has concentrated on entering finer-

woolled sheep which rank higher in fleece value, provided they still have a good carcass and are not lacking fleece weight. TheWilson family fromWest Melton had the second-placed team of three, with the Hoban f amily’s Parham Hill team, from Culverden, placing third. The ewe hoggets arrived as lambs at Dave and Rosie Clark’s property at Fernside in North Canterbury in January. Dave and Rosie run a commercial Romney flock as well as cropping, rearing bobby calves and dairy support. They are previous winners of the Mint Lamb competition, also held at the Canterbury A&P Show. The lambs were shorn in January and run in one mob until the show. The class is divided into f ive categories. The sheep are shorn in November and a wool agent evaluates each fleece, giving scores for wool quality and value.

They are judged as woolly hoggets in November and then as shorn hoggets soon after shearing. Eye muscle area scanning provides the fifth score. After all these sections have been analysed and scored, the top 75% are taken to the show. The ram hogget competition is structured similarly, except the animals are not judged shorn and are CT scanned at Lincoln instead of EMA scanning. CT scanning is a more accurate assessment. The ram hoggets are run by Gordon and Barbara Gilbert at Southbridge. This year’s winning ram hogget belonged to the Hoban family from Culverden. The Parham Hill ram placed first in wool value, clipping 7.2kg of wool (greasy weight after approximately eight months’ growth) and CT scanning. He was judged second as a woolly hogget. Chilean needle grass proves a costly pest Consultation It’s costly and complex preventing Chilean needle grass spread from the North Canterbury property he manages, says Finn Grieve. The Mount Beautiful vineyard and farm will be visited on a Chilean needle grass field day being held at the Cheviot Community Hall on Tuesday, December 8 from 10am until 3.30pm. Mr Grieve said an extra layer of management was required to contain Chilean needle grass on 80 hectares of the 700ha farm and 160ha vineyard he managed at Spotswood near Cheviot. However, he was happy to do whatever it took to help protect the wider rural economy from this invasive pest plant. Tactics included locking all gates accessing the farm from the vineyard, with all but one entrance closed to the public. Mt Beautiful was isolated from other grapegrowing properties so mostly self sufficient with its own tractors, sprayers and harvesters, Mr Grieve said. Any broughtin machinery was dismantled then cleaned with a high pressure hose before leaving, in a specially built washdown area. Vehicles which had driven through the farmyard or vineyard were also washed before exiting. Seasonal staff and visitors must stick to tracks and check boots, clothing and equipment for seed and workers learn to identify Chilean needle grass. ‘‘It’s a hassle for people but well worth the effort to prevent spread,’’ says Mr Grieve.

Federated Farmers has welcomed the recent Government announcement to run public consultation on its recently launched Environment Aotearoa report. ‘‘Opening up consultation on the reporting framework to the entire community makes a tremendous amount of sense. We all have a role to play in protecting the environment, whether that’s farmers, other industries and business or the general public,’’ says Federated Farmers environment spokesperson Chris Allen. Mr Allen says the federation welcomed the release of the first report in October because transparency is key to prioritising and addressing environmental impacts, but that report also highlighted the need for this consultation. ‘‘The Government was open about the inevitable imperfections resulting from the use of existing data sets, but we were surprised to see some data sets inconsistently applied and, in some cases, bold assumptions about what that data was saying,’’ says Mr Allen. Llama are Supreme By ROBYN BRISTOW An affinity with Llamas and a love of showing saw Rangiora High School student Amber Yuill Proctor take out the supreme performance prize at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show in Christchurch. The 14yearold, year 10 pupil was the youngest competitor in her classes, but her tender age was no barrier to her taking home a raft of first places and being crowned Champion, Supreme Champion and Supreme overall Performance Champion Llama. All classes required the young handler to have a good rapport with her animal and for the animal to have trust in its handler as it was taken through a variety of obstacles. The judge was very impressed with the bond between Amber and the two llamas Theo and Eric in the performance classes that require a good rapport between animal and handler. Amber says working with the llamas alongside her grandfather Stuart Yuill Proctor who runs the Kirsonara Llama Farm at Sefton, all year round is great. ‘‘I love working with them and showing them and when I win awards I feel very proud,’’ says Amber. The Performance classes are split into Public Relations, replicating situations a llama would encounter if walking around a town or house; Performance: replicating a country walk and Packing replicating a tramp carrying packs. The Supreme performance award came after gaining the most points overall in all classes. ‘‘I spend a lot of time working with them. They are lovely and very friendly,’’ says

Amber. ‘‘It is a bit like training a dog, but easier as you walk them through the obstacles and it doesn’t take much time to teach them’’ she says. While showing is fun, Amber’s greatest love is trekking with llamas. ‘‘That is my favourite part.’’ She recently joined her grandfather on a fiveday trek in the Hope Valley, with llama carrying the gear and stopping off to fish along the way. In March she is hoping to take part in an eightday trek from outside Hanmer Springs through to the West Coast. ‘‘You can trust them going through rivers and over gravel flats. They are very strong. They look after you,’’ says Amber.

Southbrook goes down Croquet club’s opening day South Malvern’s James Ferris notched his second spectacular century of the season in round seven of the CRV Ambreed premier country cricket competition to help his side to an upset win over the previously unbeaten Southbrook. Chasing Southbrook’s 148, Ferris scored 123 not out off 60 balls, with the three figures coming off just 50 balls. It was Ferris’ second amazing innings in a month after he smashed a 34ball century in round four. South Malvern knocked off the score in 17.3 overs to improve its record to three wins and four losses. Darryn Boyle was the top scorer for Southbrook, falling one run short of a half century with 49. Dave Beatty and Mike McCaughan each took three wickets for South Malvern. Competition frontrunners Sefton scored an easy 10wicket win over Oxford after bowling its opponents out for 111. The senior side played its first game at Southbridge in close to a decade and rolled Greendale for 139. Opener Nick Jenkins compiled a quick 46 for Greendale before the side collapsed. By SHELLEY TOPP The Rangiora Croquet Club’s opening day last Saturday ended a long wait for members. Although their club house, which they share with the Rangiora Table Bowls Club, was opened last January, the club’s playing lawns had still to be developed. After 11 years and 10 months in recess, and most of this year developing their new playing lawns, it was obvious last Saturday that members were excited to once again have somewhere in Rangiora to play the game they love. The club’s headquarters have been developed on the Waimakariri District Councilowned Milton Memorial Park, in River Road. The facility is next to the Department of Conservation’s Rangiora base, and a new council owned dog park is also being developed nearby. A good turnout of members and their guests, attended the opening day. However, the club president, Mark O’Connell, said it was unfortunate that ‘‘our nearest neighbours’’, the Kaiapoi Croquet Club, was unable to attend the opening.

Field day for farmers By DAVID HILL Making good decisions now could save production this season and beyond. Beef and Lamb New Zealand (BLNZ) is hosting a field day at Maxwelton farm, 705 Wards Road, Scargill, on Tuesday, December 1, to discuss ways to approach what is predicted to be a challenging summer. ‘‘As weaning approaches and the outlook for the coming summer is not looking promising on the moisture front, decisions made now will go a long way in dictating not only this year’s production, but they will also have a big impact on next year’s production,’’ BLNZ North Canterbury farming for profit programme facilitator Dr Tom Fraser says. ‘‘Experience tells us that those farmers who have a plan, make decisions and act on those decisions early will come through adverse times much better than those who just wait for things to happen.’’ Dr Fraser says Maxwelton has been through extreme climatic conditions for the past 12 months and like most of North Canterbury, some very hard decisions have been made to cope with these conditions and plan for the future. ‘‘Maxwelton is a diverse property with recent forage development on both easy country and steeper hills to make the property more resilient. ‘‘A dryland crop of fodder beet performed very well last season considering the conditions and management of this forage along with other pastures will be discussed on the day.’’

Dr Fraser says David and Jo Grigg, from Marlborough, who have many years’ experience coping with difficult climatic conditions, will also discuss what has worked for them. There will also be a forum of North Canterbury sheep and beef farmers discussing what has been learned from last season’s severe drought. ‘‘They will discuss how they went about making decisions and what actions worked and what they will do different when the next adverse weather event occurs. ‘‘This will be extremely valuable information as these farmers have been through a very difficult 12 months and the outcomes of the actions that they have applied to their farming systems will be valuable lessons for all sheep and beef farmers.’’ Another topic will be around feed planning and animal requirements, Dr Fraser says. He says knowing what feed is available and knowing animal requirements to achieve production targets are key drivers in profitability. ‘‘A feed budget does not have to include the whole farm, but may be applied to any area of the farm or even a particular stock class and can be applied for any time frame.’’ Dr Fraser says BLNZ has a feed budget which will be demonstrated at the field day. BLNZ’s North Canterbury farming for profit programme field day will he held at Maxwelton farm, 705 Wards Gorge Road, Scargill, on Tuesday, December 1, from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. The day will conclude with a barbecue and refreshments.

‘Green house’ wins Rangiora New Life School students have designed the house of the future. Meg Webber, Zac Taylor and Josh Miller took top honours in the secondary schools section of the Mean Green House Designs competition. The school’s Year 10 design for visual communications class has worked this year in teams to design solar efficient houses. There was a lot of research involved and outside visitors came in and shared their knowledge on

sustainability and energy gains that can be made from the sun. Along the way the students learned a lot about energy efficient house design and using solar energy effectively. It was a successful competition for the school, with Grace Cross and Olivia Eastmond also receiving highly commended for their entry.
